Vaccination is an integral part of good farm management helping optimise youngstock performance and ultimately lifetime productivity.

WHY VACCINATE?

Pneumonia

Pneumonia can affect more calves than you initially think. That’s because some calves can be affected subclinically meaning they don’t show obvious signs of the disease but underlying damage to the respiratory tract can impact growth rates.

One study1 involving nearly 500 calves showed that when pneumonia affects a group of calves a proportion will be affected clinically, and a proportion will be affected subclinically. In this study the subclinically affected calves didn’t show obvious clinical signs of pneumonia, but at slaughter their lungs were damaged and their growth rates reduced compared to calves with healthy lungs.

For every 2 calves recorded with clinical pneumonia a further 2 had suffered subclinical disease, with only 1 calf remaining truly healthy. Lung damage was found in both the clinically and subclinically affected calves, and growth rates were reduced in both.

As such, the losses from pneumonia are often higher than is realised and the impact of disease on profits underestimated.
